All Mech-E Majors
- If you are changing your major from Course [2, 2-A, or 2-OE] to another Course [2, 2-A, or 2-OE], you must submit a change of major from on add/drop.
- The subject 2.671 is a requirement for all MechE majors and cannot be substituted.
- In order to graduate, students must meet a minimum number of “Units beyond GIRs” (between 180-189) in which they should be checking on websis regularly. You can find your remaining units beyond GIRs needed under “Academic Records,” and then “Status of Registration” This is an institute requirement and exceptions are not made.
- The MechE department requires undergraduate students in Course 2, 2-A, or 2-OE must earn a grade of “C-” or higher in all prerequisites for a core curriculum class before the student can take that core curriculum class.
- Please Note: Even if an instructor permits you to enroll in said core curriculum class, you will still need to retake and successfully complete the prerequisite with a grade of “C-” or higher to meet departmental requirements for degree completion.
Course 2
- If petitioning to substitute a course 2 restricted elective with one not listed on the pre-approved list, the subjects petitioned are expected to be upper-level (defined as subjects that have non-GIR class(es)as pre-requisites).
- Students may not use a subject being used as a thesis replacement (e.g. 2.014, SuperUROP) also as a CI-M.
- Students may not use a subject for a restricted elective and also as a thesis replacement or CI-M.
- A Course 2 restricted elective is not the same thing as a “REST” subject. A Course 2 restricted elective needs to fit certain engineering criteria (listed here: http://catalog.mit.edu/degree-charts/mechanical-engineering-course-2/). The REST requirement is an institute requirement. Course 2 students are required to take 2.001 AND 18.03, which fulfill both REST subject requirements.
Course 2-A
- All 2-A students must submit their 2-A Concentration Proposals by add date of the second semester in their junior year.

Course 2-OE
- The subject 2.00A is a requirement for 2-OE and cannot be substituted.
